Bespoke Design – Ducted Heat Pumps
Ducted heat pump systems are best designed and installed by experts
A ducted heat pump system is not like a high wall or floor console heat pump system, which are a relatively self contained piece of equipment. Ducted systems need good design and
appropriately specified materials. At Gavin Lowe Energy we bespoke design all of our ducted systems, we do not use standard ducted kits.
It all starts with calculating the amount of coverage and distance for the airflow required. A suitable capacity unit can then be specified. Placement of supply and return grills, the length ducting that should be run and where they should be branched off, are all very important considerations to the outcome of your ducted system installation. The quality of the materials is also very important, they are not all equal.
Once installed our qualified team will commission and balance the system, doing this properly is an important step and will have a significant influence on the systems output, noise, efficiency and distribution of your air.
What’s involved in a ducted system?
If you are choosing a ceiling mounted ducted system, conditioned air is discharged to each area through ceiling diffusers, to operate in conjunction with one or more return air grilles. The positioning of each of the diffusers and grilles are to be located to provide the best coverage and movement of air to all areas without being obtrusive. The indoor air handler is positioned in the roof cavity, where the ducts to each area commence and terminate at the diffusers and grilles that are mounted flush to the ceiling.
Underfloor ducted systems may also be an option, where the same principal applies but air is discharged to each area through rectangular floor mounted supply grills.
For our regular supply grilles, we use the Eco Auto grille, which open in the center with a bi metallic spring moving the heat to the floor level faster. Or you may like to upgrade to a rectangular supply grill or a linear grill, there are a lot of options that can be built especially for your home or office.
Our return grille options will always have an eye to future maintenance, where they should be positioned in an accessible location, with a hinged filtered grille so access for regular filter cleaning and maintenance can be made.
We will always use full insulated and high rated ducting to reduce heat loss, and the return air ducting, silent flex, also reduces noise. Other materials required for your ducted system will be custom built plenums, and Y branches with dampers that ensure air flow is balanced and effective.
During commissioning, the system will be balanced by our qualified air conditioning engineers to ensure appropriate air flow through return to supply outlets.
Do I need zone control?
There are a number of options to control the various zones of your ducted system, including if 2 smaller systems would be suitable rather than one larger system. We recommend both the manufacturers zone control system and an after market option also. This is a good conversation to have with our design personnel so the best solution is offered to you.
Come and have a look
In our showroom, we have a working ducted system that you can see in operation and understand all the components mentioned above. There is also a display of various grill options, bulkhead installation and storyboards, all designed to assist you in making your decision.
